Hopefully you will all have noticed that you are looking at a fantastic new website for the Gallery. We have our wonderful new Web Assistant Hannah to thank for the design, but we are still looking for volunteers to help with other aspects of the Gallery. If you have a few hours of spare time a month, we’d love to hear form you. People are needed to cover the following areas:

- updating the Gallery facebook page
- tweeting through the Gallery twitter feed
- copywriting for the website
- working with our PR Assistant to write and send out press releases
- building relationships with local organisations and businesses
- looking for and arranging attendance at local events

We are also changing the way the exhibitions are managed in future, with the appointment of an Exhibition Co-ordinator for each exhibition. We are looking to put together a team of Co-ordinator’s who can manage a few exhibitions each a year, rather than committing to an ongoing role. As Exhibition Co-ordinatior you would be responsible for liaising with the exhibitor during the time from their booking to their allocated slot. You would need to ensure that all forms and monies have been returned; work with the Marketing & PR team and the exhibitor so that everybody has the information they need; and attend the gallery on the day of exhibition set up to hand over keys, run through rules, and answer any questions.

For more information on any of the jobs above, please email marketing@harveygallery.co.uk

27.04.2011

Dear Friends and Visitors,

The Harvey Gallery (HG) has gone from strength to strength in the last few years and we couldn’t have done this without your time and support – thank-you to you all.

2011 kicked off to a great start with the gallery welcoming many new and old exhibitions. Sales figures have been comparable to other years but some artists have felt a slight pinch with our current economic climate. This hasn’t stopped budding creativity from within and the gallery is oozing with excitement and artwork. We have been highly commended by many repeating groups and solo artists for maintaining our high standards. This praise should be directed to all HG’s voluntary team who give their countless hours and energy to help such a worthwhile cause - Guildford & Surrey’s community Art Gallery.

The gallery is run as a not-for-profit organisation whereby 100% of its profits get put back into art. This can be through refurbishment & services within the gallery but equally important for equipment grants given out to Adult Learning Services of Surrey. This year we gave over 3,000 pounds for the purchase of two clay slab rollers, lamps for life drawing & embroidery classes, visualiser pens for tutors to make life easier in class and helping fund a printing press. It gives me great pleasure in knowing that our valuable efforts haven’t been unnoticed and that Arts & crafts are indeed fully promoted.

The status of the gallery has also been uncertain for some time now with talk of possible closure last year. I’m very pleased to say that this is not the case and we have fought for what the Harvey Gallery stands for. We have been open since 1979 and successfully run for over thirty years – a massive voluntary feat. Surrey County Council (SCC) has decided to make our partnership official and the gallery will now be in safe hands under the umbrella of our excellent working relationship with Adult Learning Services. At the eleventh hour SCC realised the importance and commitment of HG and what it means to all the community. The gallery is for old, young, student, professional, talented or however different you are… we welcome everyone.

Unfortunately with a new baby due in July I felt I couldn’t possibly support HG with my full attention and commitment so felt it imperative I resign as Chairman. I have attached a job description for anyone interested in the role of Chairman or Vice Chair. It’s a wonderful commitment giving back to the Art’s community and needs your enthusiasm energy and a smile! On the committee, we have lots of fun working together and it’s extremely rewarding when you receive great feedback. The personal notes of support and thanks not too mention beaming artists faces when they see their artwork displayed. I will really miss not being there in a central role but hope to continue on as a Voluntary helper and subscribe on our friend’s database. Besides, I live too close to the gallery to go far! I will endeavour to maneuver the baby’s pram along Harvey Road and into the gallery every few weeks!

Finally, we want to thank-you for continuing to support us whether through exhibiting, coming to visit, stewarding or making a donation. All your efforts are appreciated however great or small!

With great sadness but equally a note of positivity I wish you all well

Deborah Parker
Harvey Gallery Chairman
(until 1st June 2011)

21.02.2011

On Saturday, current exhibitor Will Taylor was elected to the post of President of the Society of Graphic Fine Art – the Drawing Society. The foundation of a Society of Graphic Artists was first discussed before World War 1, and the first exhibition in 1921 was supported by Members of the Royal Academy.

Will Taylor now follows in the footsteps of past President Sir Frank Brangwyn and members John Piper and Dame Laura Knight. Currently Professor Ken Howard OBE, RA, Ronald Maddox PRI, Hon RWS, Hon RBA, Hon PS, FCSD and Victor Ambrus ARCA, RE, FRSA, are all Honorary exhibiting members of the SGFA.

Will comments: “I am delighted to represent the discipline of drawing in this exhibition, and pleased to have the opportunity to show my work away from my home area of Rye, making connections with other artists in this exciting project”
Will’s participation in this exhibition will give Guildford residents a chance to see drawing and printmaking of the highest standard, and we are absolutely delighted that he is taking part.
